Under his father’s guidance and the tutelage of renowned Hindustani classical maestro Pandit Guru J.V.S. Rao, Mahaprasad developed a deep foundation in both Odissi and Hindustani classical traditions from an early age.

A child prodigy, Mahaprasad gave his first public performance at the age of nine and quickly emerged as one of the most promising young talents in Indian music. In 1983, he became the first child artist from Odisha to record a commercial music album under the prestigious HMV banner with the landmark Odia album Tuan Tuen. He later became the youngest playback singer from Odisha, beginning his film singing career at the age of sixteen.

Over the decades, Mahaprasad Kar has built an extraordinary repertoire spanning Odissi music, Geeta Govindam, devotional music, ghazals, semi-classical compositions, film music, dance productions, and traditional Odia musical forms. An eminent performer with an illustrious career spanning national and international stages, he has established himself as a distinguished ambassador of Odisha’s rich musical heritage.

A postgraduate in Economics from Utkal University and a law graduate from Dhenkanal Law College, Premshankar combines academic excellence with deep artistic commitment. He holds a Master's Degree in Tabla from Prachin Kala Kendra, Chandigarh, and is recognized as an 'A' Grade Artist of both All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan (DD), a distinction reserved for artists of exceptional caliber.

His musical journey began under the inspiration and guidance of his father, Shri Krushna Chandra Dash. He received formal training in tabla under the tutelage of renowned gurus including Shri Bhaskara Kuanr at Natraj Sangeet Mahavidyalaya, Shri Mukunda Prasad Dhall at Indian Music Chamber and Shri Gopinath Behera of Cuttack. This rigorous foundation shaped his distinctive style, marked by technical precision, expressive accompaniment, and profound rhythmic understanding.
